Appointment of TRIEC’s new Chief Executive Officer – Gillian Mason
The Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Gillian Mason as the organization’s next Chief Executive Officer, effective April 3, 2023. Gillian is an influential and transformational leader with a successful track record in the non-profit sector - locally, nationally, and internationally. Through her commitment to leading positive social change, she has been successful at developing partnerships, leveraging public policy, engaging communities and measuring impact.
For 20 years, TRIEC has worked to create and champion solutions to better integrate immigrants in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) labour market. “In a post-Covid recovery, and with increased immigration numbers, TRIEC remains committed to accelerating the employment outcomes of immigrants, which will result in a thriving and inclusive economy. Ms. Mason is well qualified to advance this work and will be focused on workforce strategies for immigrants,” says Board Chair, Waheeda Rahman White.
In her six years as Principal of Gillian Mason Consultancy, she has been leading social impact initiatives and focussing her efforts on poverty reduction through the improvement of access to employment opportunities. Recently, Gillian stepped in as Interim CEO of Toronto’s Street Haven, which was aligned with her consultancy’s focus on social impact.
The depth and breadth of Ms. Mason’s work experience is reflected in her many leadership positions including: President of ABC Life Literacy Canada; Executive Director for the Centre for City Ecology; Senior Vice President - Strategic Initiatives and Community Partnerships at the then United Way Toronto; and Executive Director of the Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management (CAPAM), which she helped found and then led. Ms. Mason was also the Vice President of the Canadian Urban Institute, which she also helped found, joining them after working in Ottawa with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). She holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Western University.
She currently serves as a community representative on the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus Council (UTSC) and is Vice Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee. She is a Board Director of the Toronto Region Conservation Authority Foundation and a member of the Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) Anti-Racism Roundtable. She was also founding member of the board, then Vice Chair of Diaspora Dialogues.
“We look forward to working with Ms. Mason and leveraging her considerable skill in systems change. Her passion for supporting equity-deserving communities and her experience in the area of workforce strategies, makes her the ideal candidate to lead TRIEC through these times of change,” said Rahman White.
